So you’ve decided to visit London – but when’s the best time to go? When planning your travels, the season can make all the difference. Sometimes we hate a place after visiting in the middle of Winter, only to find that in the Summer it’s our new favourite place!
It’s definitely possible to enjoy London whatever the weather! There’s always lots going on and you’re bound to have a good time no matter when you decide to visit. That being said here’s some advice from a Londoner as to when you can get the most out of this amazing city.
Best Time for Good Weather: May – August
If you’re looking for good weather in the UK, bear in mind that nothing is guaranteed! We get our fair share of rainfall and grey days. London is fairly southern though and so often gets very hot during the summer months. The warmest months with the lowest rainfall tend to be May-August, so if you’re looking for some warmth whilst exploring the city it’s best to book for then.
If you’re really looking to avoid the cold weather, don’t visit in January or February as these tend to be the coldest months.
Best Time for Festivities: December
London’s Christmas attractions generally open in the last week of November and finish the first week of January. So, if you’re looking to enjoy the rides at Winter Wonderland or go ice skating at the Natural History Museum, make sure to book in this time slot so you’re not left disappointed!
Best Time to See the Royal Sites: August
If you’re looking to fit in some royal sites, the best time of year to visit London is definitely the summer. From late to July – September, you can visit the State Rooms (you can book in advance at the Royal Collection Trust website) and Clarence House (home to Prince Charles and Camilla) is only open to the public in August.
Buckingham Palace’s Changing of the Guard happens every day between April and July, and on alternate days for the rest of the year.
High Season: Late May – Early September
There’s no getting away from the fact that London is almost always busy. However particular tourist locations will be noticeably busier during high season (late May – early September)
December is also an extremely busy month in London, as lots of people are doing their Christmas shopping or visiting the city for festive activities. That being said, it is a lovely time to experience London and, if you don’t mind the hustle and bustle, it adds to the magic of the city.
Low Season: January – April, Late September – November
These are the colder, less favourable months. If you don’t mind wrapping up warm and maybe using an umbrella though, there’s still plenty to enjoy in the city! You’ll also probably find that hotels and airfare are cheaper around this time of year, so great if you’re travelling on a budget!
