It took me a long time to fully appreciate the magic of Europe. Isn’t that always the way when something’s right on our doorstep? We overlook the nearby beauty, straining our eyes at things further afield.
I spent many a year pining for Japanese food and Australian beaches, failing to appreciate the wonderful things that lay right under my nose. Rest assured, that is no longer the case. In fact, now you can find me happily extolling the many virtues of Europe – from its shimmering beaches to its decadent cities and everything in between. So I decided to pile together the ultimate Europe bucket list – 50 things for you to tick off on your adventures in this beautiful continent.
1. Take a Gondola Ride in Venice
Heading up the Europe bucket list is a gondola ride in Venice. There are few things more romantic than gliding along the Italian canals in the sunshine. Gondolas are also a great way of exploring parts of Venice that you can’t reach on foot.
Years ago there were closer to 10,000 gondolas in Venice. Nowadays there are only around 400 licensed ones. You’ll find gondoliers across the city vying for your attention to board their boat.
However, it’s also possible to book in advance online, where you’re likely to get a cheaper price! You can book tickets here.
Isn’t it expensive?
Yes, it is. Gondola rides have a fixed price of €80 for a 30 minute tour. At night this increases to €120. This price is per boat, however, not per person. So, depending on how many people you’re traveling with, it might be cheaper than you think!

Though much of the Berlin Wall no longer exists, there are still areas of the city where you can catch a glimpse of it. The best of these is the East Side Gallery: the longest continuous section of the Berlin Wall still in existence at 1.3km.
Immediately after the wall came down, 118 artists from 21 different countries began painting on it. It now serves as an open air gallery and has protected memorial status.
Some of the most popular works featured on the wall are Dmitri Vrubel’s Fraternal Kiss, and Birgit Kinders’ Trabant breaking through the wall.

- Take the elevator (tickets cost €11 to the 2nd floor and €17 to the top)
- Use the stairs (tickets cost €7)
If you opt for the stairs, you’ll find you won’t have to queue for as long, as this is a less popular option. You’ll walk 704 steps to the second floor. From here to you can catch the elevator to the top if you life.
Don’t miss the light show that happens every night! Get a good viewing point from Trocadero to see thousands of sparkling lights illuminate the tower. This happens every hour on the hour for 5 minutes once it gets dark. It’s a turn magical spectacle.

These delicious custard tarts are an absolute must when visiting Portugal. And if you really want to make it a bucket list item, you have to try them in Lisbon at Fabrica de Pasteis de Belem.
Pasteis de nata were created by Catholic monks in Lisbon. Monastries used large quantities of egg whites to starch clothes, leaving them lots of egg yolks. They used these to create a number of sweet treats, one of which was the pastel de nata.
In 1834, the monastery sold the recipe to a sugar refinery, who opened the infamous Fabrica de Pasteis de Belem in 1837. The recipe remains unchanged to this day and only known by a select few.

30. Learn About the History of WW2 at Auschwitz in Poland
Whilst much more morbid than a lot of the places on this list, the Nazi concentration camps are an important part of European history. Sadly the Second World War played a huge part in creating the Europe we know today and it’s important to remember that.
I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum as part of a school trip and think it’s always served as an important reminder of the destruction and hatred that humanity is capable of. It also prompted me to think more about the current world climate, which is certainly no bad thing. As George Santayana said, ‘those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it’.
I’d highly recommend getting a guided tour to really learn as much as possible from an expert
How to Get to Auschwitz
The easiest way to get to Auschwitz is to catch a bus from Krakow which costs about $4 eat way. The bus stops right at the entrance to Auschwitz and takes about 2 hours each way.
Auschwitz and Birkenau are 3km apart (about 40 minutes walk). Between mid-April and October, there’s a free but linking the two sites, which departs every hour.
Other Bucket List Ideas for Poland:

It’s a city that feels authentically French – the kind of France you’d always imagined in your mind and seen in movies come to life.

- Look for metal containers with lids – this shows that the gelato is being kept at the correct temperature
- It shouldn’t look shiny – this means that the sugar content is too high or that it’s oxidised (meaning it’s old!)
- It should be quite flat in the container – the pretty high-piled swirls look pretty but they’re actually a sign that there’s too much air in the mixture. It’s also likely that it’s high in vegetable fat to stop it from melting.
- Pick muted colours – brighter flavours might look exciting but it’s likely laden with lots of artificial colours. The best gelato is the stuff made with premium ingredients!
