Having been favoured by Europeans for many moons, international travellers are now becoming beguiled by its beautiful beaches and sunny cities. One of the most popular areas to visit is the Algarve, Portugals southernmost region. In fact, its population triples in the peak holiday season due to the seasonal residents that flock to the area for its sunshine. Today we’re breaking down the very best times to visit the Algarve, Portugal to make the most of it beautiful region.
For the Heat: July-August
If you’re looking for a summer escape with scorching sunshine, then July & August are without a doubt your best bet. With highs of 30°C and gentle sea breezes, you’ll catch a tan without getting too hot and bothered. The weather this time of year is truly marvellous, although you’ll find that people flock to the area as a result. The Algarve gets incredibly busy this time of year, so know that you’ll be fighting for spots by the pool! Luckily there are more than 100 beaches on offer, so you should be able to sun it up on the sand!

To Beat the Crowds: May-June/September-October
If you fancy the good weather but aren’t too keen on the crowds (or the price tag) of July & August, try visiting in the shoulder months. The sun still shines May-June/September-October and you’ll likely find a dramatic drop in hotel & flight prices. This might be a good time to visit if you’re hoping to visit attractions such as the Benagil Sea Cave, which gets incredibly busy during peak season!
For Surfing: October-December
If you’re hoping to catch some of the famous Portuguese waves, October-December is a great time to visit. Just watch out for the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean! If you’re a newbie, you’re probably better off visiting in the summer months, when the waves are smaller. If you’re more advance however, you’ll find the serious waves arrive during the winter months!
And the Rest: January-April
While it’s certainly less hot this time of year, if your main goal when visiting the Algarve is simply to take in the beautiful coastline and get a feel for the landscape, then this could be a great time to visit. There’s little rainfall compared to much of Europe and you’ll still be able to enjoy the regions charming towns.
