Is there anything better than cosying on down in a local pub on a cold and stormy evening, or lazing about in a beer garden in the sunshine? Today we’re sharing the very best pubs in Stratford Upon Avon (from a local’s perspective!), so you’ll know exactly where to head when you visit Shakespeare’s hometown.
I’ve been lucky enough to call Stratford home since I was 5 years old and despite moving to Manchester, I still spend a lot of time there visiting family. With that being said, you can be rest assured that these pubs have been tried and tested over many years.
Top 3 Best Pubs in Stratford
Whilst I like all the pubs on this list, there are three that have truly stood the test of time – the ones that I go back to again and again and never disappoint. If someone asked me for a quick recommendation on the street, I’d point them in the direction of one of these pubs.
In fact, this is something I often did do when working in the gift shop at Shakespeare’s birthplace over my university holidays!
The Dirty Duck
First up we have The Dirty Duck. This pub is handily located close to the RSC theatre, making it the perfect place to head after you’ve seen a show. It’s very popular amongst locals, meaning it’s often busy, particularly at the weekends. I’d always recommend booking in advance because of this, if you’re wanting to order food!
When you head in, I’d advise going through the door on your right. This is the more ‘classic’ pub area. On the walls you’ll find signed photographs of actors who have frequented the pub whilst performing at the theatre – so look out for some familiar faces! You may even see some in person, as this remains a popular spot for actors today.
My favourite spot in the room is the window seat at the front!
I’ve also found that people in here tend to be very friendly and chatty. It’s one of the only places where I consistently end up having a conversation with the people sitting nearby.
The One Elm
Up next is The One Elm. This has more of a gastropub vibe with great food and modern interiors. It’s a really big space, so there should always be plenty of room (even when it’s busy!). The large courtyard area in the back is the perfect place to enjoy a beverage in the warm summer months.
This is a good spot to head to for Sunday lunch or, if you just fancy a drink, they have a great selection of beers, wines, and gins. They also do cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks if you fancy something a bit different!
If you’ve spent the day sightseeing at Shakespeare’s Birthplace, The One Elm is the perfect place to head as it’s just around the corner!
Cox’s Yard
Cox’s Yard is one of the best pubs in Stratford to head to in the summer time. Located right on the river, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the sunshine with some drinks and watch the swans glide by.
This attracts a slightly younger crowd with its modern interiors and live music. The food is laid back and delicious with menu items such as loaded nachos, chicken wings, and burgers.
Cox’s Yard often hosts events, making it one of the more popular spots in the evening. Their New Year’s Eve parties are famous in Stratford and it’s one of the go-to places to watch the football or rugby.
Traditional Pubs in Stratford Upon Avon
The Old Thatch Tavern
The Old Thatch Tavern is the oldest pub in Stratford, so if you’re looking for a traditional place to grab a drink – this is the one for you.
The age of the place really adds to it’s charm. Here you’ll find beamed ceilings, a cosy fireplace and, of course, a lovely thatched roof. This is the perfect spot for an ‘authentic’ pub experience – perfect if you’re not from the UK and want something traditional.
They serve a selection of beers and wines, as well as food. Expect classic pub grub – fish and chips, cottage pie, and burgers.
The Garrick Inn
The Garrick Inn is a popular spot amongst tourists and locals alike.
It’s housed in a beautiful building on the high street with a traditional Elizabethan style. In fact, it’s probably one of the most photographed places in Stratford! The wood carvings on the front are particularly impressive, so make sure to keep an eye out for them.
Inside, The Garrick feels welcoming and cosy with its beamed ceilings and wooden bar. This is the type of pub you want to head to on a cold and rainy winters day.
It’s another Greene King pub, so again you can expect good food.
The Bear
The Bear is just across the river, about a 10 minute walk from the centre of town.
This has been a family favourite of ours for a number of years. It’s a cosy spot with great food – I’m a particular fan of their chunky chips (the best in Stratford in my humble opinion!).
The Bear adjoins The Swans Nest (a hotel), which also has a restaurant attached to it, so things can be confusing upon arrival. The pub is on the left hand side when you first enter through the revolving door but if you need help just ask at reception and they’ll point you in the right direction!
Other Great Pubs in Stratford Upon Avon
The Keys
The Keys is a lovely spot tucked away down one of the less touristy streets in the centre of town. Like The Encore, they have a sizeable outdoor space, making it a good spot to head to when the sun comes out.
They’re also known for live music throughout the week, giving local bands and artists a chance to shine. This makes for a really great atmosphere whilst you enjoy a drink with friends.
I’d say this is particular pub is generally frequented by locals so you’ll tend to find less tourists if you head here.
The Encore
The Encore is a lovely spot in town right next to Bancroft Gardens with a great view of the theatre, so if you can, try to grab one of the tables outside!
This is another pub in Stratford with a more modern feel and the food here reflects that. I love their fishcakes and small plates but they also do a good Sunday roast.
This is one of the best spots in the area for vegans. Pubs can often lean towards meat-based dishes but The Encore have a dedicated vegan menu with plenty of delicious options.
Pen & Parchment
The Pen and Parchment is particularly beautiful in the spring time when it’s covered top to bottom in purple wisteria (well worth a visit if only for the photo opportunity!)
Whilst it’s been modernised, it still has the feel of a classic pub with beams running through the ceilings. It’s owned by Greene King, so food is standard but good and you can expect a great selection of drinks.
Ya Bard
If you’re a beer connoisseur, you need to check out Ya Bard. Though they’re not so much a pub (more of a room in fact!), I couldn’t miss them off this list.
Ya Bard offers craft beer from independent brewers around the globe. You’ll find everything from ales to stouts, and lagers to fruit beers. This place really offers a unique experience and allows you to try something a bit different each time you visit.
The Boat House
The Boat House is more of an honourable mention, as it probably can’t be described as a pub! Nevertheless this is my favourite place to grab a drink in the summer. It sits right on the river and has a great outdoor area, where you can really lap up the sunshine.
As it’s more of a restaurant than a pub, the food here is also absolutely delicious! This is one of my favourite spots in Stratford.
