Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities in the world. In fact, I’m so obsessed with it that I’m determined to live there at some point in my life. It also just so happens to be one the most beautiful cities in the UK. In fact, head to Old Town and point a camera anywhere and you can’t go too far wrong. That being said, if your style is a little less haphazard, I’ve put together a list of places that you don’t want to miss when photographing Edinburgh for your Instagram account. Here are the best Edinburgh Instagram spots:
Top 3 Edinburgh Instagram Spots
1. The Vennel
Perhaps my favourite spot in the whole of Edinburgh is this beautiful alleyway in old town. Its elevated position makes it just the right spot to capture stunning views of Edinburgh Castle in the background of your photo. If I had to pick just one Edinburgh Instagram spot for this post, it would be this one!
2023 Update: this spot has an even more special place in my heart now, as it’s where I got engaged!
The Writer’s Museum
2. The National Museum of Scotland
This might just be my new favourite museum ever. It’s super interactive and has the best mixture of items on exhibit. It’s also absolutely beautiful – the main entrance room is a symmetrical dream, which makes it the perfect place to get those all-important Instagram shots.
3. Victoria Street
It’s not hard to see why this street is often thought to be the inspiration for J.K. Rowling’s Diagon Alley. Its line of colourful exteriors make it the perfect place to indulge in a little magic and grab a snap for the gram. The picture below was taken during the festive period, so the shop-fronts were looking particularly pretty but rest assured that this is a fantastic Edinburgh Instagram spot all year round.
You can also take photos a little further down the road with a good view of all the colourful shops winding around the corner.
4. Edinburgh Castle
You can’t go to Edinburgh and not get a photo of the iconic castle. Sitting on top of an erupted volcano, it’s not too dissimilar from Hogwarts, and there’s definitely something magical about the place.
5. Mary’s Milk Bar
Perhaps the cutest shop front in all of Edinburgh, Mary’s Milk Bar is a gelato place that definitely deserves a visit. The cuteness doesn’t stop outside though. Inside you’ll find terrazzo tabletops and lights that look like ice cream cones.
6. Circus Lane
Circus Lane is often cited as the prettiest street in Edinburgh and it’s not difficult to see why. Walking down this little street in Stockbridge feels like you’ve found yourself in a small village, not the heart of a bustling city.
7. Elton John Wings
To celebrate the launch of the Rocketman movie, artist Shona Hardie painted a pair of Elton John Wings onto a wall in old town. Walk down Candlemaker Row to find this gorgeous piece of street art and jump in front of the wings to get that perfect Instagram shot.
8. Stockbridge Market Arch
Stepping through the original entrance archway for Stockbridge Market feels as though you’re stepping back in time. The old facade makes for a beautiful photo and gives you an idea of what the city looked like many moons ago.
Calton Hill
Ross Fountain
Scott Monument
Arthur’s Seat
Royal Mile
Toolbooth Tavern
