On a quest for the best bakeries in Edinburgh? You’re in the right place!
If you’re new around here, you might not already know that Edinburgh is my favourite city in the world. I love the beautiful old streets, the kind people, and the amazing food. In fact, I love it so much that my fiancé (now husband) knew it would be the perfect place to propose.
If you’re new, you also might not know how obsessed I am with baking. Claire Saffitz is my idol and I have made it my personal mission to try as many bakeries as possible on my travels. Thankfully, I’ve been able to visit Edinburgh multiple times to sample the best sweet treats this city has to offer.
So, if you’re on the hunt for the perfect new bakery to try, check out these drool-worthy spots, below:
Best Bakeries in Edinburgh
Looking for the very best bakeries in Edinburgh? If I had to pick, these lovely local gems would be my top 3!
Soderberg
If you’re into Nordic baking (which I very much am!), you have to stop by Soderberg. This Swedish bakery has a solid foundation of cinnamon buns, cardamom buns (my personal favourite), pistachio horseshoes, and kladdkaka.
If you’re really lucky, you’ll visit them during the festive season for their saffron buns or at lent for their Semla buns.
No matter when you find yourself here, rest assured you’ll be served up some delicious Scandi-goodness. This is without a doubt one of the best bakeries in Edinburgh.
This beautiful bakery is so successful and well-loved that it now has a whopping 7 locations in the city, so no matter where you find yourself in Edinburgh, you’ll never be too far away from a cinnamon bun.
Twelve Triangles
Twelve Triangles is another of the bakeries in Edinburgh that has grown so popular, it’s opened multiple locations across the city – 7 to be exact.
What makes Twelve Triangles so special is that they make everything from scratch with slow fermentation sourdoughs, and homemade jams, custards, and pie fillings.
The bread is, of course, incredible but if you’re a pastry-lover, look no further than their buns and cruffins. They truly are spectacular – dare I say, it is worth a trip to Edinburgh for these alone?!
The Pastry Section
The Pastry Section can be found in one of my favourite areas of Edinburgh – Stockbridge. This pretty little village in the city is the perfect place to wander around with a sweet treat.
At The Pastry Section, they bake everything on-site from scratch. I love that they have such a wide variety of different bakes on offer, from brownies, to lemon meringue tarts, wagon wheels to millionaires shortbread. No matter your preference, you’ll find something to satisfy your craving here.
They also serve up locally-sourced tea and coffees and the staff are lovely.
More Bakeries in Edinburgh
101 Bakery
101 Bakery, located in Newington, has become somewhat famous for its cinnamon buns and it’s not hard to see why. Pillowy, delicious, and also vegan (?!) – these soul-warming buns are the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee in the autumn.
Babyfaced Baker
What started as food blog during the pandemic has now become a fully-fledged bakery in Edinburgh. The star of the show at Babyfaced Baker has to be the cookies. There’s always a great variety with the very best ones being of the stuffed variety.
They’re open 7 days a week but bear in mind that this is a counter bakery rather than somewhere you can stop and sit down.
Archipelago
If you know how to appreciate a good loaf of bread, you’ll probably enjoy Archipelago. Everything they sell is made from scratch using local organic ingredients. And the selection of bread on offer is not only beautiful, it’s downright impressive!
Regular rotation includes apple and cinnamon sourdough, carrot and pumpkin seed, and coriander and orange rye. It really is the perfect place to pick up something a little more unusual.
Of course, they also sell a lovely selection of sweet treats too, from loaf cakes to pastries. The bread is certainly the start of the show though!
Nice Times Bakery
Nice Times Bakery is sweet in every possible way. From the pretty pink shop front to the wonderful array of treats on offer, they really get it right.
Whether you’ve got a hunkering for a cookie or can’t get pastries off your mind, Nice Times Bakery has you covered. Not only are their treats extra instagram-worthy, they’re also just plain delicious.
You can also find their phenomenal cakes at the ever-so-nice Lovecrumbs cafe.
They’re only open Friday-Sunday though, so definitely the perfect spot for a weekend treat.
The Bearded Baker
The Bearded Baker is a must-visit for any doughnut enthusiast. Their small but mighty menu is constantly rotating, including gems such as the white chocolate and pistachio, and lemon poppyseed ricotta doughnuts.
They also have an array of breakfast options – perfect if you prefer your baked goods as a dessert!
Mimi’s Bakehouse
The lovely Mimi’s Bakehouse has multiple locations across Edinburgh and recently won baker of the year (so you know they’re good!). Their cakes a sight for sore eyes and their traybakes are the perfect afternoon pick me up to accompany your cup of tea.
They also deliver baked boxes nationwide, so wherever you are in the country, you can enjoy one of the best bakeries in Edinburgh.
Highly Anticipated Edinburgh Bakeries
Lannan Bakery
I have not yet had the pleasure of visiting Lannan. But if the long queues and drool-worthy Instagram posts are anything to go by, this place will be a serious contender for one of the best bakeries in Edinburgh.
As the brain-child of the impressive Darcie Maher, Lannan’s flavours always look so interesting (not to mention delicious). Recently they’ve featured a fig leaf chiffon cake, and a maple, pecan, and brown butter pastry.
Rest assured, I will report back as soon as I’ve tried this place. I have a sneaky suspicion I won’t be disappointed!
Gluten Free Bakeries in Edinburgh
Sugar Daddy’s Bakery
Why should those who can’t eat gluten suffer a life without baked goods? Sugar Daddy’s is a 100% gluten free bakery in Edinburgh! It goes without saying that this is no mean feat.
Forget any preconceived notions you had of dry, boring bakes. Sugar Daddy’s prove that gluten free can be just as delicious. They serve up a whole host of different goodies, from cupcakes to cookies and blondies to brownies. Their cakes are particularly impressive!
