If you’re reading this blog, chances are you dream of travelling the world, of seeing new places and having adventures. Sometimes the people in our lives don’t share this same excitement for travel, or they have jobs/children that restrict how long they’re able to be away. People, especially females, can often be scared to solo travel. It’s outside most of our comfort zones and requires a little more self reliance than we’re perhaps used to.
Try this: make a list of all the places in the world that you want to see. Now, let’s say that you manage to find a friend or spouse willing to travel with you to one of these places each year. How long would it take you to travel to all of those destination?
Here’s the thing, if you don’t go by yourself, you may never go at all – so which of those options is scariest to you? Because if you wait for someone else to come on these trips with you, you may be waiting forever.
Here are 6 reasons why you should solo travel in 2020.
The Freedom
The freedom of solo travel has got to be its biggest draw. You can do what you want, when you want. There’s no need to factor in anyone else’s budget or bucket list. This is the perfect time to go on your dream trip, where you can be as selfish as your heart desires
Self Understanding & Acceptance
Being alone leaves a lot of time to truly get to know who you are. There’s nobody else to distract you from the things going on in your head (maybe some of which you’ve been avoiding for a while). Time by yourself allows you to confront a lot of the stuff that you usually push to the back of your mind. You’ll probably find that solo travel will bring you a new peace.
Meet New People
Often travelling solo means you’re more likely to meet new people than when you’re alone. When we’re travelling with others, we’re usually so wrapped up in spending time with them that we become less open to spending time with new people. Travelling alone makes you much more approachable. Think about it? Are you more likely to try to make friends with a tight-knit group of mates in your hostel or someone who’s travelling solo?
Increase Your Confidence
Travelling solo is the one thing that skyrocketed my confidence. It made me realise that I was perfectly capable of doing things alone – that I didn’t have to rely on other people all the time. Sure, it might feel a little scary at first when you’ve missed your connecting flight or you’ve got completely lost on the way to your hostel but that’s all part of the fun! And once you figure it out, you’ll realise that you’re (almost) invincible. Confidence is a muscle and solo travel is the perfect way to exercise it.
Be in the Moment
When travelling with others, it’s easy to get distracted. You’re too busy chatting about nothing, having a laugh, or thinking about how annoying they are when they haven’t had a good night’s sleep. When travelling alone, you find yourself taking in the moment a lot more and appreciating all the beauty that’s around you.
The Sense of Achievement
Nothing beats the sense of achievement that comes with solo travel. Whenever we accomplish something that was outside of our comfort zone, we’re left feeling so proud of ourselves. Getting on a plane alone and arriving in a completely new place gives you a buzz like no other!
